DESCRIPTION:The Berlin Ableton User Group is back! This meetup is open to producers\, songwriters\, DJs\, and musicians of all types and proficiency levels who use Ableton and are looking to exchange ideas\, network\, meet like-minded producers\, and learn new tips and tricks from our presenters and fellow participants.\n \n\n\n\nFor this month’s Ableton User Group\, we will be exploring FM Synthesis. In this workshop\, you will learn how to utilize FM Synthesis to design your own unique synth sounds. For demonstration purposes\, we will be focusing on the use of Ableton’s stock FM synth\, Operator\, but the concepts you learn can easily be applied to any FM-style synth. \nWe will cover what FM Synthesis is\, and how it differs from other styles of sound synthesis\, understanding key parameters of FM style synths (e.g. Carrier\, Modulator\, Ratio\, Algorithm\, Operator)\, and practical sound design examples. \nAbout the artist: \nKeanu Raves is an Ōtautahi (New Zealand) producer and DJ who began his journey through the underground in 2018 after an inspiring night out at the Berlin techno institution Tresor. This inspiration still courses through his music\, which veers between classic Detroit style grooves and the reverb drenched chord-stab heavy sound of Berlin.  \n2023 saw Keanu release music on Keepsakes’ imprint Haven\, and for the Swedish techno imprint Substantiv\, as well as make his international DJ debut for Copenhagen-based party Gag.  \nIn May 2024 Keanu made the move to Berlin\, where he is now based\, to deeper immerse himself in the international techno scene. SUMMARY:Improvisation with Sequencers Masterclass with MOONBEAN
DESCRIPTION:Explore improvisation through sequencer-based electronic music with MOONBEAN. \nSequencer-based Improvisation entails the synchronizing of one or more instruments together via a “Master Clock”\, then using sequencers\, sound design\, audio mixers\, and effects\, to spontaneously compose fluid and spontaneous music in real-time. In this masterclass\, we will discuss a brief history of the technology and the cultural history of electronic dance music\, and how specific pieces of equipment changed the genre. As well as how these factors spawned a unique type of improvisation\, and why it differs from other improvisational art forms.  \nThe brief presentation will be followed by an open studio session\, workshopping a selection of synchronized electronic instruments. A small assortment of synthesizers\, drum machines and effects will be available for participants to try. \nMOONBEAN presents this workshop as part of a live performance tour in Europe. They will perform in Berlin at Madame Claude on Friday Oct 31 as part of a special Halloween party event. \nAbout the Artist: \nMOONBEAN is a hardware electronic duo composed of Valentina Morelli and Colin Harrington. They are Toronto-based multimedia artists\, A/V technicians\, and multidisciplinary musicians. MOONBEAN has toured Canada and Europe playing semi-improvised electronic dance music. They also produce and direct music videos. This meetup is open to producers\, songwriters\, DJs\, and musicians of all types and proficiency levels who use Ableton and are looking to exchange ideas\, network\, meet like-minded producers\, and learn new tips and tricks from our presenters and fellow participants. \nDuring the event\, you will also have the opportunity to see the 343 Labs facilities\, meet some of their instructors\, and learn about their courses. This event will take place at House of Music in the cafe on the ground floor.  \nAbout the artist:\n \n\n\n\nCoaxing nuanced expression from analog machines and digital possibilities alike\, Noah Pred has been envisioning the future through electronic music for over twenty years – yet the story of this accomplished artist\, producer\, sound designer\, developer\, educator\, and DJ continues to unfold. \nReinterpreting his signature production style anew\, 2020 saw the release of two full-lengths charting the territories between generative cosmic experimentalism\, intricate polyrhythms\, delicate soundscapes\, evocative acid\, and hypnotic dub frontiers. \nA two-time Juno Award nominee in his native Canada\, a music educator and technologist in his adopted hometown Berlin\, an alum of Cynosure\, Highgrade\, and Trapez LTD\, and founder of the acclaimed Thoughtless imprint\, Noah is also a DJ whose past residencies at Stereobar in Montreal and Fukhouse in Toronto helped lay the framework for his dynamic yet fluid sets that continue to resonate with diverse communities. \nA notable member of Canada’s underground scene in the early 2000s\, Pred’s distinctive production style earned him a place among his peers with releases on Immigrant\, Intrinsic Design\, and Consigned Recordings. Driven by the fuel that fired up Thoughtless\, Noah relocated to Berlin in 2011\, where his creative horizons continued to expand via collaborative projects with Tom Clark as False Image on Get Physical\, with Pablo Bolivar on Apparel and Biotop\, with Tim Xavier on Alphahouse\, and with Deepchild as Concubine. His latest label platform\, Timeshare\, continues to explore the possibilities of creative collaboration while aiming to assist charitable organizations engaged in important work. \nAs Canada’s very first Ableton Certified Trainer\, Noah has taught a wide variety of techniques for stage and studio over the past decade\, at institutions such as the Rich Media Institute\, MacProVideo\, FEED\, 343 Labs\, and BIMM Berlin. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning & Teaching\, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Born in the United States and now based in Berlin\, Matthew continues to inspire the next generation of electronic music producers as both an artist and educator. He is a graduate of Berklee College of Music with a bachelor’s in Electronic Production & Design and a master’s in Music Production\, Technology\, and Innovation. \nKnown by his artist monikers Sentient Number Six and NΞØN BL∆CK\, he has released music with respected international psytrance collectives like Post-Modern Music and Gaggalacka\, with one of his tracks breaking into Beatport’s top 100 releases of the genre. The session begins with a live three-deck demonstration blending breakbeat\, techno\, club\, and UK bass\, followed by a focused breakdown of essential mixing and transition techniques.
